Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Self Help Services offers a range of Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy programmes on Overcoming Bulimia, Anxiety Disorders and the “Beating the Blues” programme for anxiety and depression.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a very effective short-term therapy used to help people control their mental health to help them to get better and more importantly to stay better. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is designed to produce changes in thinking and therefore resulting in changes to behaviour or mood.

The programmes available:

Beating the Blues
Beating the Blues is a computerised cognitive behavioural therapy programme for anxiety and depression, which was developed jointly by Ultrasis plc and Dr Judy Proudfoot from the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London. The programme consists of an introductory video and 8 fifty minute sessions which incorporate best practice in cognitive and behavioural therapy delivered through a computer based multi-media package. See www.ultrasis.com for more information.

Anxiety Disorders
This is an interactive training programme that develops clinical assessment, management skills and also enhances knowledge of anxiety disorders. The package was developed by Calypso at the University of Leeds and is ideal for use both by healthcare trainees and qualified staff alike. The CD-Rom contains:

  • Three live patient studies for on screen assessment.
  • Mental state examination training.
  • Multiple choice tests on assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
  • A detailed reference section on anxiety disorders.
  • A glossary of medical terms and definitions.

Restoring the Balance
The Restoring the Balance programme is a self-help CD-ROM designed for people with mild to moderate anxiety and depression, providing information and strategies for managing problems. Employing techniques from cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), Restoring the balance is designed to encourage patients to change their patterns of thought.

The programme has been designed to be used in settings where post-session support is available, but can also be offered as a stand-alone programme for well-motivated users working on their own. It uses simple instructions, text and graphics making it particularly suitable for people who have limited (or no) experience of using computers. It comes complete with accompanying worksheets.

Overcoming Bulimia
Overcoming Bulimia is an interactive self-help programme for use by individuals suffering from bulimia. The programme was developed by Calypso at the University of Leeds and is based on a cognitive behavioural therapy approach to treatment. The programme helps the user to understand and overcome their bulimia and teach vital confidence building skills. The programme uses videos of patient case studies, animations, audio soundtracks, images and text. It is easy to use and contains eight one-hour sessions.

Electric Apple
This CD-ROM was developed by Mental Health Media and presents a variety of strategies for dealing with mental distress. The programme utilises people the experiences of users and survivors across England and Wales. Again a very useful and interesting programme.
