Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has today announced that Luciana Berger MP will become the shadow minister for mental health. This is the first time such a role has existed, in either the shadow cabinet or the cabinet.

Self Help’s Chief Officer, Nicky Lidbetter, commented: “We welcome the creation of this post that recognises mental health as an area of huge significance in the health landscape and gives it an increased prominence in national politics. This could be exactly what is needed to finally put mental health on the map. It’s a step towards achieving parity of esteem between physical and mental health issues and I would urge for the position to be replicated in the current administration.”
