Self Help joins more than 200 high-profile signatories to call for equality and increased funding for mental health in the NHS.

The campaign has been launched by Norman Lamb MP, former mental health minister, Alastair Campbell, Time to Change ambassador and former Labour government communications director, and Andrew Mitchell MP, former Conservative Cabinet minister.

Supporters include a number of MPs and former health ministers, faith leaders, celebrities and sports personalities.

Nicky Lidbetter, Chief Officer of Self Help, commented:

“Mental health services have seen significant cuts over the last few years despite the increase in demand for support. The NHS is under a lot of pressure at the moment but when people don’t get the right help at the right time, the risk is that they become more unwell and need more intensive treatment. The government has committed to achieving parity of esteem between physical and mental health issues, but this can only work with the right resources.”

“We fully support the equality for mental health petition that calls for the government to increase investment in mental health services so that the one in four of us experiencing mental health problems can get the help and support we need.”
